Aviation Cocktail

This one's a bit tricky, because it involves the rather antiquated Maraschino. But it is wonderfully delicious and is our house specialty. Maraschino is a clear liqueur that tastes like sour cherries. It has nothing whatsoever to do with maraschino cherries. It also has a bit of a medicinal bite, but once it's mixed you don't really notice it. If you can locate some (hint: Spec's), it's well worth buying a bottle, even though it's not good for much else besides maybe mixing with soda water. Look for extremely dusty bottles with crappy labels half-peeled off that look like they came from the Balkans (mine says it's from Dalmatia).

Recipe (from Harrington):
1 1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz Maraschino
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

Shake with ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry (prior to reading how they are made).
